Travel hacking involves strategically earning and redeeming points and miles offered by credit cards and loyalty programs. Picture this: you swipe your credit card for everyday purchases like groceries or gas, and those swipes turn into points that can be used to book luxurious airplane cabins or opulent hotel suites. Here’s how it works:

  • Travel Hacks for Flying: Frequent flyer programs like United MileagePlus® are your key to the skies. By accumulating miles through flying with United or its Star Alliance partners, credit card spending, and everyday purchases, you can redeem them for award flights in economy, business, or even first class. Imagine the difference between squeezing into a cramped economy seat and stretching out in a spacious first-class cabin with lie-flat seats, gourmet meals, and in-flight entertainment – a luxurious way to arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and relaxed.
  • Travel Hacking Credit Cards: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® credit card is a popular choice for travel hackers due to its generous welcome bonus. Plus, you earn points on travel and dining, further accelerating your points accumulation. Consider other travel hacking credit cards that offer bonus miles on specific airlines, like United℠ Explorer Card. This could help you rack up miles for your dream airline faster, bringing you closer to that first-class experience you’ve always dreamt of.

Let’s break these down so you get a clear picture of how it all works!

United MileagePlus®: Unlocking Luxury Flights with Miles

United MileagePlus® is a popular frequent flyer program that allows you to redeem miles earned through flying United or its Star Alliance partners, credit card spending, and everyday purchases for award flights. Here’s a deeper dive into navigating United MileagePlus® for luxury travel hacks:

Award Charts and Search Tools:

United MileagePlus® uses award charts that outline the number of miles required for different redemption options. Saver awards offer the best value for points redemption, requiring fewer miles but having limited availability. Standard awards offer more flexibility but require more miles. Dynamic awards offer the least value with fluctuating mile requirements based on demand.

Finding Award Availability: United’s website and mobile app offer award search tools. Use filters to search for specific cabin classes (think luxurious business or first class) and narrow down your search by dates and destinations. Remember, award availability for premium cabins can be limited, so planning your trip well in advance (I’m talking 8-12 months) is key.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Credit Card: Beyond Travel Points

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® card is a popular choice for travel hackers due to its generous welcome bonus and ongoing points earning potential. You can earn a whopping 60,000 points after spending $4000 within the first three months of opening the account. I recommend opening it before you buy a house, take a trip or make any big purchase. This way, you meet the spending requirements easily and get your 60,000 points!

However, there’s more to the card than just travel points. The card offers an annual travel credit of $95 that can be used towards airline fees like baggage fees or seat selection. It also provides travel insurance coverage for trip cancellation/interruption, emergency medical evacuation, and baggage delay.

Example: Flying Luxurious with United MileagePlus® and Chase Sapphire Preferred®

I have always wanted to visit Bora Bora. My husband and I decided it would be perfect for our honeymoon in July 2023. We paid $125 for two Premium Economy class tickets to Bora Bora from Houston, TX. Keep in mind, these tickets are usually almost $4,000 per person during the summer. Here’s how we did it:

We both have Chase Sapphire Preferred® credit cards and we’re both MileagePlus® members. We use our credit cards for our everyday purchases and let them build up. When we opened our credit card accounts, we ensured it was right before furnishing our home so we were both able to hit the $4000 minimum spend to get 60,000 points each. To help you understand better, 60,000 points is worth about $750 when redeemed on the Chase Travel Portal. I have a blog post here on how to open Chase and MileagePlus® accounts and transfer points for use.

Additionally, we both fly United and Star Alliance partners whenever possible to rack up miles specifically for United MileagePlus®. I fly more than he does so I had about 100,000 miles on United MileagePlus®. We looked up flights in September 2022 and there were only 2 options left for flights with award redemption! Be sure to plan way in advance if you plan on redeeming miles. Since we are members of the same household, my husband was able to transfer his Chase points to my Chase account. The tickets were 94,900 miles per person without airline surcharge fees. Following this, I transferred 90,000 points from our combined Chase points to my United account. It’s a 1:1 transfer from points to miles. We only paid for the additional airline fees which came to $125.

However, we really wanted to fly United Polaris (first) so we used another travel hack. Usually, when the flight is not fully booked, there are Upgrade offers either the day before or the day of travel. They usually range from $250-$1000 per person depending on the origin and destination of the flight. Thankfully, we were able to leverage same-day upgrade for $500 per person. This was an amazing deal seeing as the original first class tickets were $6,000 per person! (see image below)

Luxury on the Ground: Travel Hacking Hotels

Hotels play a crucial role in creating a luxurious travel experience. Here’s how travel hacking with points and miles can elevate your hotel stays:

  • Marriott Bonvoy® and Hilton Honors®: These renowned hotel loyalty programs allow you to earn points on stays at a vast portfolio of properties, including iconic brands like Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Hilton, and Conrad Hotels & Resorts. Subsequently, you can redeem points for a luxurious suite with a private balcony overlooking the bustling streets of New York City or a spacious room with a stunning ocean view in Bali.
Endless Possibilities
  • Elite Status Perks: As you stay more or spend more with a co-branded credit card, you can climb the elite status ladder within these programs. This unlocks valuable perks that enhance your luxury experience, like room upgrades, free breakfast, access to exclusive lounges, and bonus points. Picture enjoying a complimentary breakfast on the balcony of your upgraded ocean-view suite at a luxurious beachfront resort in Bali – the perfect start to a day of exploration and relaxation. Imagine sipping on cocktails in a private lounge overlooking the city skyline before your evening flight home – a luxurious end to an unforgettable trip.

  • The Power of Partnerships: Many travel hacking credit cards, like Chase Sapphire Preferred®, offer transfer partners. This means you can strategically move your points to programs with the best redemption value for specific luxury hotels. Imagine using your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to book a luxurious stay at a JW Marriott property in Paris, leveraging the transfer partnership for optimal redemption value. This allows you to stretch your points further and experience a wider range of luxurious hotels throughout the world.

Marriott Bonvoy® and Hilton Honors®: Elevate Your Stay with Elite Status

As you accumulate points and climb the elite status ladder within Marriott Bonvoy® and Hilton Honors® programs, you unlock valuable perks that further elevate your luxury travel experience. Here’s a breakdown of the elite tiers and associated benefits:

  • Silver: The entry-level tier offering bonus points on stays and priority check-in (limited benefit for luxury travelers).
  • Gold: Offers additional perks like late check-out, room upgrade possibilities (subject to availability) and free breakfast at select properties. This tier starts to enhance your luxury experience.
  • Diamond (Hilton Honors®)/Platinum (Marriott Bonvoy®): Provides significant benefits like guaranteed room upgrades (excluding suites), access to exclusive lounges with complimentary food and beverages, and bonus points on stays. Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail in a luxurious lounge overlooking the city skyline before heading out for an evening in Paris.
  • Platinum Elite (Marriott Bonvoy®): The top tier offering the best benefits, including complimentary room upgrades (including suites when available), bonus points on stays. Picture yourself relaxing on a private balcony overlooking the ocean in your upgraded suite at a luxurious beachfront resort in Bali.

In Bora Bora, we took advantage of my Hilton Honors® points. We booked a stunning overwater bungalow with a stunning view of the ocean at The Conrad. It was the best holiday ever! We enjoyed pure luxury without breaking the bank.

Travel Hacking for Couples: Double the Power!

Travel hacking becomes even more rewarding when embarking on adventures with your significant other. Here’s how couples can double their points accumulation power:

  • Both Partners Sign Up: Encourage your partner to sign up for the same travel hacking credit card and loyalty programs. This allows you to combine points and miles to meet your travel goals faster.
  • Strategic Spending: Coordinate your spending on the travel hacking credit card. Imagine maximizing points accumulation by using the card for joint expenses like groceries or dining out.
  • Referral Bonuses: Take advantage of referral bonuses offered by many programs. Recommend the programs you use to your partner and earn bonus points while helping them embark on their travel hacking journey.

Remember, communication and planning are key. Talk about your travel goals and strategically use both partners’ points and miles for unforgettable luxury travel experiences.

Advanced Techniques: Unlocking More Luxury Travel Hacks

While the basics can get you started, there are additional luxury travel hacks to maximize your points and miles:

  • Targeted Spending: Many credit cards offer bonus points categories that rotate throughout the year. Focus your spending on these categories to accelerate your points accumulation. Imagine a scenario where your favorite travel hacking credit card offers bonus points for online shopping during the holiday season. By strategically using that card for your online holiday shopping, you could significantly boost your points balance for that dream luxury getaway to the Maldives.
  • Referral Bonuses: Many programs offer bonus points or miles for referring friends. Spread the travel hacking love by referring your friends to join programs like United MileagePlus® or Marriott Bonvoy®. This is a win-win situation, as you earn bonus points while helping your friends unlock their own travel hacking journey. Imagine referring a few friends who are also passionate about travel – suddenly, your points balance has jumped significantly, bringing you closer to that luxurious hotel stay you’ve been eyeing.
  • Travel Hacking Portals: Consider using travel hacking portals like AwardWallet or ExpertFlyer. These tools help you track your points and miles across different programs, search for award availability, and identify sweet spots for optimal redemption value. Imagine finding a hidden gem of a luxury hotel available for significantly fewer points using a travel hacking portal. This could stretch your points further, allowing you to experience multiple luxurious stays on a single trip.

Beyond Free Flights and Rooms: Unveiling the True Luxury Travel Hacks

Travel hacking isn’t just about free flights and hotel stays. Many programs offer unique experiences that elevate your luxury travel even further. Imagine using Marriott Bonvoy® points to attend an exclusive wine tasting event in Napa Valley or using Hilton Honors® points for a private cooking class with a renowned chef in Florence. These unique experiences add an extra layer of luxury to your trip. Create lasting memories that go beyond just the destination itself.

Taking Flight with Your Travel Hacking Journey

Ready to embark on your own luxury travel hacking adventure? It’s simple:

  1. Sign up for free for hotel and airline loyalty programs like United MileagePlus®, Marriott Bonvoy®, and Hilton Honors®. These programs are free to join and open the door to a world of points and miles, putting the key to luxury travel experiences right at your fingertips.
  2. Consider applying for a travel hacking credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card. Remember, responsible credit card use is crucial. Pay your balance in full to avoid interest charges and maximize your points accumulation. There are many other travel hacking credit cards available. Do your research to find one that best suits your travel style and spending habits. I highly recommend getting a VISA or Mastercard. I lived in Serbia for three months last year and they only accept VISA or MasterCard there.

Bonus Tip: Building a Dream Luxury Trip with Points and Miles

Once you’ve mastered the basics of travel hacking, consider these additional strategies to craft a truly unforgettable luxury travel experience:

  • Plan in Advance: Award availability, especially for premium cabins and luxury hotels, can be limited. Plan your trip well in advance, ideally several months out, to secure the best redemption options. Avoid the disappointment of having enough points for a first-class seat to Paris, only to find no availability on your desired dates.
  • Consider Off-Peak Travel: Luxury destinations often come with hefty price tags, especially during peak season. Consider traveling during the shoulder seasons or off-peak times to find better award availability and potentially lower prices on non-accommodation expenses. Imagine experiencing the vibrant culture of Rome without the summer crowds, or enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives during the monsoon season (which often boasts fewer crowds and lower hotel rates).
English 300*250
  • Be Flexible: You will notice that the award redemptions have a wide range of points/miles required to purchase tickets/book hotels. Most times, you will use less points if you leave on a Wednesday instead of a Sunday, for example. When planning a trip where you want to use points/miles, definitely keep flexibility with dates in mind.
  • Combine Programs: Don’t limit yourself to a single program. Many travel hacking credit cards offer transfer partners. This allows you to strategically move points between programs to maximize your redemption value. Imagine using your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to book a luxurious hotel stay and transferring airline miles earned through flying to cover your flight. So, let’s create seamless luxury travel experiences without breaking the bank.
